Israel is preparing for a potential ground or expanded military move against Hezbollah once weather conditions improve and the Christmas and New Year holidays pass, amid assessments in Tel Aviv that the campaign to strip the group of its advanced weapons is far from complete, according to a report in the Israeli daily Maariv.
The newspaper said Israeli security estimates point to an opportunity for the army to resume intensified operations after the current spell of severe weather eases. Northern Command officers warned that the coming days of fog, low visibility and harsh winter conditions could allow Hezbollah to move weapons and ammunition or reposition members of its elite Radwan Unit for possible attacks on Israel.
In response, the Israeli military said it has raised readiness along the northern frontier to counter any potential movement by Hezbollah.
The army also announced that Israeli Air Force jets carried out a series of overnight strikes on 13 targets in southern Lebanon, using 16 different types of munitions. One of the primary targets, it said, was a training compound belonging to Hezbollah’s Radwan Unit located roughly 20 kilometers north of the city of Nabatieh.
According to the military, the site had been used to train Hezbollah operatives in offensive missions against Israeli forces and civilians, including firearms practice and drills involving various types of weapons. Other targets hit in the wave of strikes included command centers, weapons depots and a rocket-launching site that the army said were linked to planned attacks on Israel.
“This strike was carried out to prevent the movement of the Radwan Unit, which poses a direct threat to Israel’s security,” the army spokesperson said. “The targeted sites and the military training conducted there represent a clear violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon and pose a danger to the security of the state.”
