U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton on Wednesday accused Iran’s naval mines of standing behind the May 12 attacks on four tankers docked off the Emirati port city of Fujairah, deeming it as a “manifestations of concern" about Tehran.
“It’s clear that Iran is behind the Fujairah attack. Who else would you think would be doing it? Someone from Nepal?” Bolton told reporters at a U.S. embassy briefing in the UAE regarding the attacks.
“There is no doubt in anybody’s minds in Washington, we know who did this and it’s important Iran knows we know,” Bolton said.
Bolton stressed that the purpose of his Abu Dhabi visit was to consult with U.S. allies in the Gulf about the threat from Iran, especially after another failed attack was recently made on the Saudi oil-port city of Yanbu.
“We’re very concerned by the Quds Force and Qassem Suleimani,” Bolton said, referring to the elite foreign branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its commander.
He warned that Washington would hold the Quds Force responsible if “further indirect attacks” by Iranian proxies like the rocket attack near the US embassy on May 19 were conducted.
“There is no reason for Iran to breach the terms of its 2015 nuclear deal with world power. There's no reason for them to do it unless it is to reduce the breakout time to nuclear weapons."
“Our forces are not vulnerable, our civilian sites are certainly not as vulnerable as Iran might have thought,” he affirmed.
"I am the national security adviser, not the national security decider," Bolton highlighted, assuring a unified positions between his and that of U.S. President Donald Trump.
