Princess Diana's Iconic 'Black Sheep' Sweater to Go Under the Hammer Within Weeks at Sotheby's Auctions

The late Princess Diana’s iconic “black sheep” sweater is set to go under the hammer within weeks and is expected to fetch as much as (AUD)$117,000. 

The red knit from the label Warm & Wonderful, which features a lone black sheep among rows of white sheep, will headline Sotheby's Fashion Icons' online sale from August 31 to September 14.

Diana first wore the famed fashion item to watch Prince Charles play polo in June 1981 - just one month before they walked down the aisle.

After the then 20-year-old was photographed wearing the knit, the Warm & Wonderful label “blew up,” the New York Post reports, receiving “the ultimate kind of influencer coverage” in the 1980s.

The timeless fashion piece was rediscovered in an attic earlier this year by one of the founders of the brand, Reuters reports.

In 1981 the Princess of Wales’ private secretary Oliver Everett wrote to Warm & Wonderful co-founder Joanna Osborne asking if it could be repaired after the wrist became damaged.

A few months later she received a replacement and was snapped wearing it in 1983 to another polo match with the Sarah Ferguson and Prince Charles.

"If you’re Princess Diana, certainly you have access to lots of pieces of apparel you could choose to wear," Sotheby's global head of fashion, Cynthia Houlton told the publication.

"And the fact that she wanted a replacement and then again two years later wore ... the replacement sweater, I think speaks really volumes from her how much this sweater meant to her.”

In January a dress owned by the late Princess sold at auction for more than (AUD)$880,00, five times its pre-auction estimate.

The strapless silk and velvet evening gown last sold for just over (AUD)$35,000 in 1997 before her tragic death when she donated 79 dresses to a charity auction.

Collectively, the sales raised (AUD)$4.77 million for AIDS and cancer organisations.
