Prince Turki Says Hezbollah and Others Must Stop Using Lebanese as Political Pawns

Former Saudi intelligence chief Prince Turki Al-Faisal voiced optimism about the recent political developments in Lebanon, particularly the election of President Joseph Aoun and the formation of a new government headed by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

Speaking on Arab News’ “Frankly Speaking” program, Prince Turki reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s strong support for Lebanon’s parliamentary actions, saying,

“The Kingdom has wholeheartedly supported the actions of the Lebanese parliament in electing the president," he said.

“I think the Lebanese people are tired of having to be the sacrificial lamb, if you like, for either sectarian or other political factions, whether they be Hezbollah or some other Lebanese parties in the course of the development in the future," he added, expressing hope that the Lebanese people themselves would safeguard the country’s new political trajectory.

The former intelligence chief also conveyed a sense of renewed confidence in Lebanon’s economic potential, noting that Saudis are eager to re-engage with the country.

“I hear from Saudis here that they’re willing and anxious to be able, if you like, to go back to Lebanon,” he said. “Those who have not invested yet, I think, are also thinking of the opportunities there.”

Reflecting on Lebanon’s historical role as a center of commerce in the Arab world, Prince Turki recalled his late father, King Faisal’s words: “Lebanon is the lungs of the Arab world. I hope it returns to that.”

Prince Turki underscored the importance of international assistance in ensuring the success of Lebanon’s new leadership.

“I hope that the support that is coming to Lebanon, not just from Saudi Arabia, but from the world community, will help that government to become more effective in meeting the needs of the Lebanese people.”
