Pope Leo XIV on Sunday paid tribute to newly beatified Blessed Elias Howayek, praising the former Maronite patriarch as a champion of dialogue, hope and national unity, while praying that his legacy would inspire peace in Lebanon and strengthen Maronite communities around the world.

Speaking after the Angelus prayer in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope reflected on the beatification ceremony held in Lebanon a day earlier for Howayek, who served as Maronite Patriarch of Antioch from 1899 to 1931 and founded the Congregation of the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family.

The pontiff said Howayek led the Maronite Church for more than three decades with "great dedication and pastoral sensitivity," describing him as a leader whose influence extended well beyond the Church.

Calling him "a man of dialogue and hope," Pope Leo said Blessed Elias was a prominent figure in Lebanon's religious, social and political life and earned the title "Father of Greater Lebanon" for his historic role in the country's founding.

The Pope concluded his remarks by praying that the new blessed's "prayers and intercession" would continue to accompany Maronite faithful across the world and bring "the gift of peace" to all the people of Lebanon.

Describing Lebanon as "a country dear to my heart," Pope Leo expressed hope that Blessed Elias Howayek's example would continue to inspire reconciliation, unity and faith during a challenging period in the country's history.
