Church bells rang across Lebanon on Sunday as the country welcomed Pope Leo XIV for a landmark visit.
The pontiff’s plane landed at Beirut International Airport around 3:45 p.m., greeted by a 21-gun salute. Ships docked at Beirut Port also sounded their horns in celebration of his arrival.
Pope Leo XIV descended the aircraft steps and personally greeted top officials, including President Joseph Aoun and his wife, Naamat, as well as the Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
The Pope then proceeded to the official reception platform, accompanied by a performance from the Lebanese Army band.
Both the Vatican and Lebanese national anthems were played to mark the occasion.
Two Lebanese Air Force fighter jets escorted the Pope’s plane as it entered the country's airspace, underscoring the significance of the historic visit.
