A delegation of opposition lawmakers on Thursday visited UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, to express their firm stance against involving Lebanon in the ongoing war.
The delegation emphasized the need to fully implement UNSC Resolution 1701 on both sides of the border by exerting international pressure to halt Israeli attacks on Lebanon and to prevent the use of southern Lebanese territory through enhanced coordination between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army.
The delegation informed Hennis-Plasschaert about a petition submitted to Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, requesting a special parliamentary session to urge the Lebanese government to fulfill its responsibilities in safeguarding citizens and declaring a state of emergency due to the deteriorating situation.
The opposition group, which included MPs Mark Daou, Ghassan Hasbani, Ashraf Rifi, George Okais, and Adib Abed el-Masih, also called for a UN fact-finding committee to investigate the Beirut port explosion, citing four years of obstruction in the local investigation.
In response, Hennis-Plasschaert briefed the lawmakers on ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
