Opposition MPs held a meeting at the "Tajaddod" bloc headquarters in Sin El Fil, as part of their "ongoing coordination and consultations to finalize their stance on preparations for the January 9 presidential elections session, which could mark a historic turning point for Lebanon’s future."
Following the meeting, MP Waddah Sadek read a statement saying: "We, as Opposition MPs, have agreed on steps that emphasize the need to abandon the prevailing approach and style of governance that have dominated the country for decades. We aim to open the door to a return to the exclusive application of the Constitution, the implementation of the Taif Accord, the activation and reform of institutions."
He stressed the "need to fully implement the terms of the ceasefire agreement, inform the Lebanese public about violations, and expedite the handover of weapons."
Sadek concluded bysaying: "We recognize the immense responsibility entrusted to us toward all of Lebanon to elect a president and establish a new executive authority to replace the current completely ineffectual one. This includes electing a president, appointing a prime minister, and forming a cohesive government free of sectarian quotas and monopolization. This government must comprise qualified ministers whose priorities include safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty, enacting structural reforms in administration, the economy, and public finance, and eradicating all forms of corruption and waste. However, this necessity does not mean, under any circumstances, that we would accept electing a president for a six-year term who lacks the qualifications to fulfill the critical tasks required throughout the full mandate. These tasks must simultaneously address: restoring the Constitution and rule of law, reclaiming sovereignty over decision-making and territory while restricting arms to state institutions, implementing all international agreements and resolutions, carrying out necessary reforms to address the financial and economic collapse, rebuilding Lebanon’s legitimate economy, and mending Lebanon’s relations with its Arab neighbors and the international community."
