The opposition MPs sternly deplored “the destructive coup” that had been ongoing since the morning of “the black Wednesday,” saying that is targeting the justice system through decisions they rejected as “illegitimate.”
“We will not accept any compromise over the blood of the innocent who fell on August 4,” said the lawmakers in reference to the martyrs of the deadly 2020 Beirut port explosion.
“This ongoing coup aims to entrench the hegemony of an abhorrent autocratic regime to which we will never surrender and which we will face with all the possible peaceful constitutional and legal means,” said MP Waddah Sadek in the name of the opposition lawmakers following their meeting on Friday.
In their statement, the MPs rejected any tampering with the powers of the judicial investigator, urging the resumption of the probe and the issuance of an indictment.
They also called for holding State Prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat accountable for his “flagrant violations.”
