Netanyahu: Israeli Strikes Against Iran and Hezbollah Led to Assad’s Downfall

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has attributed the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria to Israeli military and strategic actions, deeming what is happening as "historic."

“This is a historic day in the history of the Middle East. The Assad regime is a central link in Iran’s axis of evil — this regime has fallen," Netanyahu said during a visit to Mount Bental, overlooking Israel’s border with Syria.

Netanyahu linked the regime's fall to the sustained military campaign waged by Israel over the past 14 months against Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, and other Iranian-aligned groups.

“The blows we have inflicted on Iran and Hezbollah, the main supporters of the Assad regime, have created a chain reaction throughout the Middle East,” Netanyahu stated, emphasizing that this ripple effect has galvanized movements seeking liberation from oppressive regimes in the region.

However, Netanyahu cautioned that Assad’s ousting presents both opportunities and challenges.

“We are acting first and foremost to protect our border,” he noted, referencing the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement that established a buffer zone along the Israeli-Syrian border. He confirmed that the agreement has disintegrated as Syrian soldiers have abandoned their posts.
