Mikati: Lebanon Ready to Enforce Ceasefire, Deploy Army to Southern Border, Elect President

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Monday that Lebanon is ready to adhere to international calls for a ceasefire, emphasized the country's commitment to fulfilling UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a ceasefire and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the southern border.

"We are ready to implement Resolution 1701 and deploy the Lebanese army to the southern borders immediately upon the cessation of hostilities," Mikati declared following a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri.

The caretaker prime minister also shared that Speaker Berri assured him of prompt parliamentary action following the ceasefire.

"President Berri confirmed that once a ceasefire is in place, Parliament will be convened to elect a consensus president, one who poses no challenge to any political faction," said Mikati, suggesting a step towards resolving the country's long-standing political deadlock.

"Lebanon is prepared to accept all donations and assistance coming through the United Nations," he added, underscoring the nation's dire need for support amid escalating violence and humanitarian concerns.
