Mikati Deflects Blame for Conflict: I Did Not Choose to Fire the First Shot

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati reiterated his call for the immediate implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 to end the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to achieving peace in the region.

"I have assured that the Lebanese army is capable of strengthening its position in southern Lebanon," he said in an interview with Sky News Arabia, reaffirming the country's readiness to fulfill its responsibilities under international agreements.

Despite the escalating tensions, Mikati clarified his stance regarding the ceasefire, stressing that Lebanon is prepared to uphold its side of the agreement once Israel reciprocates.

"We are committed to the ceasefire and ready to implement it as soon as Israel does," he declared, making it clear that Lebanon’s actions would be contingent on Israel's cooperation.

In response to questions about the decision to engage in hostilities, Mikati maintained that Lebanon did not initiate the violence, and therefore cannot unilaterally declare an end to the conflict.

"I did not make the decision to open fire in the first place, so I cannot make the decision to cease fire," he said, distancing himself from any responsibility for the conflict's outbreak.

Mikati also highlighted ongoing communications with key Lebanese political figures, particularly Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, expressing confidence that Lebanon will adhere to a ceasefire agreement once it is established.

"Based on the deliberations we are conducting, we can say that if a ceasefire is implemented, we will abide by it."
