Lebanon’s Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation, Jamal Al-Hajjar, has lifted the travel ban on Judge Tarek Bitar, LBCI reported, allowing him to travel to Bulgaria to question the owner of the Rhosus ship, who is currently in custody there.

A Bulgarian court has denied Lebanon’s request to extradite the owner of the ship linked to the 2020 Beirut port explosion, but approved a key judicial step that allows Lebanon’s lead investigator, Judge Tarek Bitar, to question the suspect on Bulgarian soil, according to information obtained by Voice of Lebanon.

Pope Leo XIV visited Lebanon this week, the third visit by a supreme pontiff to the country since John Paul II in 1997 and Benedict in 2012 (Pope Paul VI stopped very briefly in 1964, on his way to India). The fact that Lebanon is the site of the Pope’s first foreign visit (with Turkey) is significant. The country holds the highest percentage of Christians in the Arab world.

Caretaker Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi said that "the Lebanese state rejects the displacement of our children and for the Lebanese citizens not to find job opportunities, and we are responsible for preserving our identity."
"We call on the international community to commit to Lebanon’s highest interest. We are ready to negotiate with it for a clear return plan for the displaced to prevent losing our country", Mawlawi added.
"Lebanon belongs to its people, not to the highest bidder. We stand firmly by international legitimacy, pledging unwavering support to all municipalities in their pursuit of rights and the enforcement of laws", he noted.
