President of the Beirut Bar Association Fadi Masri noted that "there is a tendency to postpone the Bar Association elections due to the exceptional circumstances the country is going through, pending a final decision from the Bar’s council meeting."
In an interview with Voice of Lebanon, Masri emphasized that "anyone joining the Bar should possess a certain academic, cultural, and ethical standard."
On the topic of digital transformation within the Bar, he stated, "Since I was elected as a member, I have actively pursued this matter, so this is not a new file. When I assumed the role of President, I aspired to achieve digital transformation. Despite all financial challenges, I worked to launch this project, even with limited resources. Today, more than 1,200 lawyers are registered on the platform, each with access to remote electronic services and a registered identity on the platform."
He added, "Digital transformation facilitates lawyers' work and organizes the Bar Association, encouraging members to register electronically."
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Lebanon and the Israeli aggression, he said that "as the Bar Association, we cannot intervene in the decisions of the International Criminal Court due to certain constraints that pertain to states. I do not see any prospect for results due to technical and political reasons. However, regarding international national judiciary, there is room to file a complaint."
He continued, “We can approach the local Lebanese judiciary, though its impact is limited. We can also turn to UN-affiliated international human rights bodies, which we are preparing for as an association. We are in communication with them to support efforts in prosecuting Israel for the crimes committed in Lebanon, to pursue accountability, and to provide assistance to lawyers impacted by the war.”
He stressed that "the Bar Association does not engage in politics but instead upholds international resolutions to promote peace in the region. We must take a serious step forward to remove ourselves from these conflicts and shield our country from them."
He concluded, “Those who wish to continue the war should fight it in their own country, not in Lebanon. Our country is not a platform for missiles or political messages. This stance reflects the beliefs of everyone who values justice and the rule of law.”
