Maronite Patriarch Urges Full Implementation of Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Terms, Hopes for Lasting Stability

Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rahi on Sunday expressed hope that the ongoing 60-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel could evolve into a permanent peace, commending the efforts of those who contributed to achieving the truce, both within Lebanon and on the international stage.

"We are grateful to all who worked tirelessly to bring about this ceasefire," he said in his homily.

Al-Rahi also extended his sympathies to those affected by the conflict, particularly the residents of Beirut’s suburbs, Tyre, southern Lebanon, Baalbek, and other areas, many of whom have endured personal loss.

"We commend those who have returned to their homes despite mourning the family members they lost," he said.

"We also thank everyone who opened their doors and facilitated their stay during these difficult times," he added.

The patriarch praised the solidarity shown by friendly nations and humanitarian organizations that provided aid to displaced individuals, paying tribute to the Lebanese Army and Civil Defense for their sacrifices and recognized media professionals who lost their lives in service.

Al-Rahi concluded by urging Lebanon and Israel to fully implement the 13 points outlined in the ceasefire agreement and strive for enduring peace under the terms of the 1949 armistice.

The 1949 armistice, signed after the first Arab-Israeli war, established the withdrawal lines for both countries’ armed forces, adhering to the international border defined in the 1923 Paulet-Newcombe agreement. It also stipulated limited military presence in the border region.
