Mikati Seems Upbeat after “Positive” Cabinet Talks with Aoun

“We are in the last meters from forming a government,” Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati said Tuesday after a new round of “positive” talks with President Michel Aoun.

It was Mikati’s most optimistic assessment since he was designated last month to form a new Cabinet to enact reforms and rescue the crises-hit country from total economic collapse. However, Mikati, speaking to reporters after meeting with Aoun at Baabda Palace, stressed that there were still hurdles that need to be overcome.

“We are working hard to eliminate all obstacles and form a government that takes into account all [sectarian] balances. We did not discuss the government’s program. We are in the last meters from forming a government,” Mikati said after his 11th meeting with Aoun since his designation on July 26 to form a new government.
