Gemayel Deems the Lebanese as Victims of an Authority-Militia Alliance

Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Sunday stressed that the party’s cause is mere Lebanese, deeming people as victims.

“The Lebanese people are victims of an alliance between the authority and the militia,” Gemayel said in an interview with New TV, affirming that there is no way for salvation in light of such corrupted system.

Gemayel stressed that the Lebanese hold the authority responsible for the August 4th explosion that had jolted Beirut city, saying that everyone who had received the report about the explosive materials that were present at the port must be held accountable.

“There are certain people who do not want us to reach answers regarding the explosion,” he said.

“The Lebanese Judiciary is politicized. We do not believe that the Judge concerned with this file will reach any results,” he noted.

“If we cared about quotas and power, we would not have resigned from a government in which we had 3 ministers,” he added.

Gemayel stressed that they have refused to be a part of the presidential settlement as they knew the consequences out of it, saying that whoever was involved in the settlement was aware of the situation we are currently facing.

“We were, and still are convinced, that there is no way for salvation with this current ruling authority,” he said.

“This system needs to change, and accountability will be achieved in the upcoming parliamentary elections,” he affirmed.

The Kataeb leader stressed that the solution today lies in assigning an independent Prime Minister and give him a green light so as to form an independent government with a specific mission, deeming Nawaf Salam as a person authorized with this port and has people’s trust.

“Nawaf Salam has shown his success in managing the Security Council in the name of the State of Lebanon when there was no President and government. He is respected by the majority and is able to achieve a percentage of unanimity,” he said.

Gemayel said that the Lebanese aspire to the logic of a sovereign Lebanon, liberated from all the sediments of the past, the old ways, and the quotas, affirming that they are seeking a State that preserves diversity and pluralism through clear steps, including decentralization.

“The reconciliation that has not happened since the end of the war must be achieved,” he pointed out.

“The situation today needs statesmen who do not encourage fear but rather confront it,” he said.

“The new Parliament that we hope for will produce fairer representation even under the current law.”

Gemayel deemed the goal today as to unify the opposition and confrontation, stressing that the country’s interest is above all else.

“There are attempts to paralyze the country in a bid to strike the change logic outside the framework of the system’s parties,” he said.

“What protects the Christians, and all the citizens is the formation of a Lebanese, not sectarian, structure that believes in building a country that resembles us,” he added.

Gemayel slammed the current system for its failure in forming a new government, deeming such act as a crime.

“A complete, independent government is needed,” he said.

“If they are not capable of forming an independent government, let them resign and restore the decision to the Lebanese people,” he said.

“I don't believe that a sect can be saved without saving the country. The battle is Lebanese and not sectarian,” he noted.

The Kataeb leader deemed the Lebanese army as the guarantor of the democratic path and the production of power, affirming that the Parliamentary elections will have the greatest impact on the presidential battle in the coming stage.

“Change is inevitable, and people will not disappoint us,” he said.

“A large part of our work is aimed to the return of expatriates. Expatriate can contribute to humanitarian terms and in preparing for the upcoming elections,” he stressed.

“The Christians, like all Lebanese who believe in a civilized country, are in danger today,” he noted.

Gemayel called on the Lebanese to remain steadfast, saying that what is required today is to try uniting the change, sovereign, and opposition forces so as to present a serious alternative.

“We will resume the struggle. The confrontation continues in a bid to form an independent government,” he concluded.
