Gemayel was on a two-day visit to Brussels to attend the EPP's political assembly during which a special resolution in support of Lebanon’s ‘October Uprising’ and holding early parliamentary elections was adopted.
The EPP called on the new Lebanese government to implement sustainable economic and social reforms and to try to stop the total economic collapse of the country, thus responding to the Lebanese people’s aspirations, needs and expectations, including that of early elections.
It also urged the Lebanese government to reinforce good governance, rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the fight against corruption.
In addition, the party reaffirms its support for Lebanon’s stability, neutrality, sovereignty and political independence in order to avoid dragging the country into wider regional conflicts in respect to Lebanese people’s free will and determination to preserve the safety and security of their country amid regional turmoil.
During his visit, Gemayel also met with senior officials in the European Parliament to discuss the recent developments in Lebanon and the region.
“Fruitful discussions on Lebanon, Kataeb-EPP partnership, and an opportunity to thank Donald Tusk and the EPP team for their support to Lebanon’s Sovereignty and the ‘October Uprising’,” Gemayel wrote on Twitter following the assembly.
The Kataeb leader was accompanied by the party's International Secretary Marwan Abdallah.
The Lebanese Kataeb party was unanimously elected in 2016 by the political assembly of the European People's Party to join a new partnership platform for parties from the MENA region.
Founded in 1976, the European People's Party, pan-European party of the centre-right, is the largest political organization in Europe with 80 parties and partners from 42 countries, 13 heads of state and government (both, EU and non-EU), 14 European Commissioners and the largest Group in the European Parliament.
