During a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Saifi following a politburo meeting, Gemayel asserted his partaking in the consultations as he will be nominating Lebanon's former ambassador to the United Nations, Nawaf Salam for premiership.
“We do not know Salam in person and have not contacted him to inform him of our proposal but we acknowledge his leadership characteristics to guide the country during this stage as he is independent, competent, and experienced,” he affirmed.
“Salam served as Lebanon's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. He possesses great expertise in the diplomatic field and was elected as judge on the International Court of Justice,” he described.
Gemayel reiterated the need to respect people’s demands in forming a technocratic government, urging the public not to lose hope because this is the chance of a lifetime to make a change.
“The state cares less about the collapse of the country. While the country tumbles down, officials are being flippant,” he noted, criticizing their ongoing attempts to buy themselves time in putting a name forward for a prime minister and then pulling the rug out from under him, wasting yet another week.
“This is a flagrant disregard for the people, the country and the economic situation”
“Don’t you understand that people are not willing to endure your performance? Can’t you see the growing rate of suicide cases? Aren’t you going to halt your political deals?” he questioned.
“Everyone involved in the partitioning of shares and deals is responsible for the poverty inflicting the country,” he outlined.
The Kataeb chief praised protesters’ latest victory in thwarting new settlements which the ruling authority has been concocting.
