Gemayel Blasts Economic Part of Middle East Peace Plan

Kataeb MP Nadim Gemayel on Sunday criticized the economic part of the U.S. peace plan for the Middle East that was unveiled on Saturday, stressing that Lebanon is not a "real estate company".

The White House released a $50 billion economic plan that would create a global investment fund to lift the Palestinian and neighboring Arab state economies.

The “peace to prosperity” plan, set to be presented by White House senior adviser Jared Kushner at an international conference in Bahrain next week, includes 179 infrastructure and business projects.

More than half of the $50 billion funds would be spent in the Palestinian territories over 10 years while the rest would be split between Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan.

Lebanon would get $6 billion, according to the plan.

“Mr. Kushner, it is time for you to realize that we did not sacrifice the lives of tens of thousands of martyrs for billions of dollars in exchange for settling the Palestinians and others in Lebanon,” Gemayel wrote on Twitter.

“Peoples' issues are not addressed with money, but by giving them rights, independence and sovereignty,” he added.
