Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel wrapped up his three-day visit to Brussels where he held talks with high-ranking officials on the sidelines of the political assembly of the European People's Party (EPP) and the executive meeting of the Centrist Democrat International (IDC-CDI).
Speaking at the IDC-CDI's executive committee meeting, in which the Kataeb party holds the position of vice president, Gemayel stressed the need for the international community to provide support in order to safeguard Lebanon's sovereignty, independence and neutrality, pointing out that regional conflicts have been negatively reflecting on the country and affecting its political and economic stability.
Gemayel also outlined the importance of pushing for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions, notably 1701 and 1559, which safeguard Lebanon’s sovereignty and stipulate the need for the Lebanese state to extend its control across the country's territory and to restrict the possession of arms to the legitimate security forces.
The Kataeb leader stressed that Lebanon is a country of openness and dialogue, adding that it cannot be part of any foreign axis.
During his visit, Gemayel met with Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, with talks focusing on bilateral ties as well as on the recent developments in Lebanon, the Middle East and Europe.
He also held talks with the President of the Centrist Democrat International, Andrés Pastrana, with whom he conferred over the role of the Kataeb party in the CDI, and discussed the challenges threatening democracy around the globe and the ways to work on preserving freedom.
