Legal Complaints Filed Against Former Hezbollah MP over Threatening Statements

Lawyer Majd Harb has formally lodged a complaint against former MP Nawaf Al-Moussawi at the Court of Cassation, following the latter's controversial statements regarding the assassination of President-elect Bachir Gemayel.

Harb’s action, announced on the platform “X,” underscores a growing concern over statements that many see as threatening and inflammatory.

In his post, Harb expressed support for his colleague Elie Mahfoud, who has also filed a complaint against the former Hezbollah lawmaker, emphasizing the importance of a united stance against what he described as arrogant, criminal behavior.

“Whenever we all raise our voices, we make it clear to every arrogant criminal that we will not remain silent," Harb wrote.

This move follows Elie Mahfoud's recent appearance at the Court of Cassation in Beirut, where he, along with several other lawyers, filed a complaint against Al-Moussawi. The complaint alleges that Al-Moussawi made a direct death threat against any presidential candidate opposed by Hezbollah.

Mahfoud criticized the judiciary for its lack of prompt action, highlighting a pattern of reckless and deadly behavior by Al-Moussawi's political team, dating back to the attempted assassination of Marwan Hamadeh. According to Mahfoud, Al-Moussawi’s comments are not only provocative but also serve as a direct threat to presidential candidates, suggesting that any candidate not approved by Hezbollah could face assassination.

In a recent TV interview, Al-Moussawi made clear threats against any president who might be elected against Hezbollah's will, saying that "No president will take office. If they do, they won’t live." The former Hezbollah lawmaker took the assassination of President-elect Bachir Gemayel as a historical reference, hailing the perpetrator, Habib Chartouni, for "doing his national duty."
