Leeds United 1-6 Liverpool: Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota Both Score Braces As Reds Boost European Hopes

Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota scored braces as Liverpool got their Premier League campaign back on track with a 6-1 win at Leeds.
Cody Gakpo opened the scoring just after half an hour, before Salah fired a second beyond Illan Meslier four minutes later.

Luis Sinisterra grabbed one back for Leeds early into the second half, but Jota quickly restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage with his first goal in a year.

Salah had a goal ruled out for offside before he scored another and Liverpool’s fourth, wrapping up the points, before Jota added another with a neat finish from the edge of the box. Darwin Nunez added further gloss to the scoreline in injury time.

Liverpool are still eighth in the table but have closed the gap on the likes of Brighton, Aston Villa and Tottenham in their hunt for European football. Leeds remain two points clear of the drop, and go to Fulham next in their bid for survival.

Leeds had started the match well, but two slip-ups led to quick-fire Liverpool goals that put the game firmly in the visitors’ hands heading into the break.

First, Junior Firpo lost possession to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played a quick one-two with Salah before racing down the right flank and squaring the ball across the six-yard box to find Gakpo, who made a run at the back post before tapping into an empty net.

Four minutes later, Jota dispossessed Weston McKennie high up the pitch to spark a counter-attack, and carried the ball into Leeds' final third before he laid the ball left for Salah to run onto and fire Liverpool ahead with a high finish at the near post.

It was a perfect start to the second half for Leeds, who scored within two minutes of the restart to get themselves back in the game.

Konate, who was under no pressure whatsoever with the ball at his feet, allowed Sinisterra to close him down before the Columbian nicked possession and coolly dinked the ball over Alisson.

But Liverpool restored their two-goal cushion just as quickly as they had produced it in the first half. Curtis Jones played a perfectly-weighted defence-splitting pass into Jota, who made a clever run around the back of Rasmus Kristensen before lifting the ball over Meslier.

Salah grabbed his second of the game, finishing an end–to-end move that saw Andy Robertson fly down Liverpool's left wing before pulling a cross back for Gakpo, who unselfishly helped the ball on to Salah who bent his shot back across goal and into the far corner.

Jota added a fifth with a neat finish on the edge of the box that nestled into the bottom left corner, before Nunez came off the bench to meet Alexander-Arnold’s ball over the top and slot home for goal number six.

TALKING POINT - LIVERPOOL HIT LEEDS FOR SIX

When Liverpool win, they win big. Their last league win, or in any competition for that matter, came against Manchester United in that relentless 7-0 victory at Anfield (the 9-0 win over Bournemouth also springs to mind). Since then, they’ve been beaten three times and drawn twice, but they got back on track at Leeds.
All of a sudden, their European chase is back on and looks doable. A Champions League finish might be a stretch but after tonight’s performance, they’ll fancy their slim chances with eight games to go.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - DIOGO JOTA (LIVERPOOL)

Jota was deadly and proved to be just what Liverpool have been missing as he continues his return from injury. His goal that restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage was his first in a year, and it was a crucial goal in the match with Leeds having just clawed one back.
He went on to score another, as well as assisting Salah’s goal in the first half, in a brilliant all-round offensive display.
