Lebanon concluded the final phase of its municipal and local chief elections on Saturday, with polling stations across the South and Nabatiyeh governorates closing their doors at the end of a relatively calm voting day marked by a high number of uncontested races and modest voter turnout.
Voting opened at 7 a.m. in dozens of towns and villages across the two governorates. By day's end, the Ministry of Interior announced that 109 of the 272 municipalities had already secured victories by acclamation, underscoring a broader trend of candidates running unopposed in many districts.
Turnout figures varied across districts, with Jezzine and Sidon leading in voter participation. According to final numbers released after polls closed, Jezzine recorded a turnout of 47%, Sidon 41%, Nabatiyeh 41.35%, Tyre 36.48%, Hasbaya 35.42%, Marjayoun 30.19%, and Bint Jbeil 26.50%.
The elections proceeded without major incidents, although minor scuffles were reported. In Sidon, security forces intervened to de-escalate a dispute outside the Maarouf Saad Cultural Center. Additional complaints were lodged throughout the day — 191 in total — with the vast majority categorized as administrative issues, most of which were resolved through coordination with the Interior Ministry.
With the polls now closed, vote counting is underway to determine the outcomes in the remaining contested municipalities.
