Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Thursday called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to expedite the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, emphasizing that Lebanon can no longer bear the burden of hosting them.
During a meeting with UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi at the Baabda Palace, President Aoun stressed the need for the international community to provide financial and humanitarian support for the repatriation process. He noted that some countries around the world have already begun repatriating Syrian refugees.
"We want the refugees to return as soon as possible to their homeland, and we are ready to cooperate with you in all ways," President Aoun said, urging the UNHCR to organize convoys for the return of refugees.
He also emphasized the importance of addressing the ongoing influx of refugees into Lebanon.
