Special meetings were held between Lebanese American activists and advisors in the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at coordinating efforts to pressure Lebanese political forces to prevent any attempts to obstruct the path of change or restructure the Lebanese system under the new presidential era.
The messages sent by Congress members Darrell Issa and Darin LaHood to the American President and the Lebanese President were modified to enhance political pressure and support the transitional process in Lebanon.
According to "An-Nahar" sources, the meetings reveal a serious intention to activate U.S. sanctions against politicians considered as obstacles to the political process or military and civilian institutions.
The sanctions paper was placed on the table as one of the potential tools, and it may be activated in the coming months, focusing on individuals close to Hezbollah and its allies. Demands by Lebanese American activists have increased for the swift implementation of these sanctions, stressing the need to include prominent figures without specifying names or execution mechanisms.
In the Lebanese government formation file, a clear U.S. direction emerged to support a government made up of technocratic ministers capable of effectively managing their ministries, away from traditional political influences.
Washington refuses the appointment of partisan figures, which explains the statement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, regarded as a direct message to the designated Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, urging him to form a government not subject to Hezbollah's influence. The U.S. stance affirms that aid to Lebanon is contingent upon forming an independent and strong government; otherwise, sanctions will be ready to impose more pressure on parties opposing this direction.
The U.S. consultations also include discussing the possibility of signing new peace agreements between Arab countries and Israel, with a note of some Lebanese-American circles' desire to make Lebanon part of the Abraham Accords. This is part of a broader vision for the future of the Middle East, reflecting the viewpoint expressed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on several occasions.
Regarding the situation in South Lebanon, the performance of the Lebanese Army received American praise, especially in terms of its deployment on the borders. However, some American circles express caution "regarding the cooperation of some senior army officers with Hezbollah," as mentioned by "An-Nahar."
Information indicates that civilian movements in southern villages occurred due to leaks from an army officer to Hezbollah concerning details of Israeli withdrawals and repositioning in certain areas. This development was politically exploited by the "Resistance Axis," attempting to achieve field gains by moving southerners towards villages supposed to be included in the Israeli withdrawal.
These developments reflect the extent of overlap between political and military files, where Lebanon finds itself under increasing pressure, between striving to meet international directions to form an independent government and maintaining internal stability amid existing power balances.
