President Joseph Aoun convened an extraordinary meeting at the Presidential Palace in Baabda with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The focus of the meeting was the ongoing situation on Lebanon’s southern borders and the continued Israeli violations, with discussions centered on the urgent need for action and commitment to international resolutions.
The meeting underscored the Lebanese state's unified position on the Israeli occupation of its territories. The attendees called for Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese land, in adherence to international laws and United Nations resolutions, foremost of which is UNSC Resolution 1701.
Lebanese leaders reiterated their firm commitment to Resolution 1701, emphasizing that Lebanon will adhere to all its provisions without exception, even as Israel continues its repeated violations and disregard for its clauses. Despite Israel’s continuing breaches, the Lebanese government maintains that full implementation of the resolution remains critical for regional stability.
The meeting also emphasized the vital role of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). The leaders affirmed the army’s preparedness to assume its responsibilities along Lebanon’s internationally recognized borders, ensuring the protection of Lebanon's sovereignty as well as the security and stability of the southern Lebanese population.
Moreover, the leaders referenced the joint statement issued by former U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron on November 26, 2024. The statement, which called for a "ceasefire and related commitments regarding security arrangements and the full implementation of Resolution 1701," highlighted the international community’s resolve. The U.S. and France underscored the mutual understanding that Israel and Lebanon would accept these commitments simultaneously. However, the Lebanese leadership expressed frustration over Israel's failure to meet its international obligations, particularly regarding the full withdrawal from Lebanese territories.
