The Lebanese Kataeb Party’s Department of Artistic and Cultural Affairs has mourned the passing of iconic Lebanese actor Antoine Kerbaj, paying tribute to his legacy and lamenting the circumstances that led to his retreat from the public eye in his later years.

In a heartfelt statement, the party described Kerbaj as a national symbol who withdrew from the spotlight, heartbroken by the state of the country and the decline of the arts.

"In national protest against those who plundered the country’s resources and spread corruption wherever their treacherous hands could reach, he bowed, wounded, withdrew in sorrow, and disappeared from screens and cameras — his heart shattered, his spirit broken, and his sense of life dimmed," the statement read.

Kerbaj, best known for his unforgettable portrayal of "Barbar Agha," left an indelible mark on Lebanese arts and culture through a career that spanned decades and earned him widespread admiration. The Kataeb Party's statement painted a poignant picture of his final years, describing him as a man who carried the weight of Lebanon's turmoil and artistic decline with silent dignity.

"Barbar Agha fell from his horse and departed in silence, with dignity and noble character, surrounded by the love of the people, adorned with the respect of his peers, and honored by hundreds of distinguished artistic works," the party stated. "Angels now carry his well-deserved medals, crowning him with the laurels of heroes whose memory lives on in the hearts of generations."

The Kataeb Party extended its deepest condolences to Kerbaj's family, as well as to the Syndicate of Theater, Cinema, Radio, and Television Actors in Lebanon.

"We mourn the loss of an artistic and national icon whose memory will remain eternal in the hearts of generations."
