Kataeb MPs to Boycott Parliamentary Session Over Diaspora Voting Obstruction

The Kataeb MPs Bloc said it would boycott a legislative session scheduled for Thursday unless a proposed law allowing Lebanese citizens living abroad to vote for all 128 members of parliament is placed on the agenda.

In a statement, the bloc said the session called by Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri amounts to a continuation of previous sittings, with no changes to the legislative agenda. The Kataeb lawmakers argued that holding another session without addressing the diaspora voting issue would once again sideline what they described as a fundamental constitutional right.

The bloc said it would only participate if lawmakers are given the opportunity to debate and vote on an urgent draft law granting non-resident Lebanese the right to elect all 128 MPs, rather than being limited to a smaller number of seats.

Describing the issue as a constitutional matter, the Kataeb MPs stressed that the voting rights of Lebanese citizens abroad must not be suspended or bypassed through procedural delays or political maneuvering.
