Jreij Says Expanding War Serves No One's Interests

Vice President of the Kataeb Party George Jreij on Tuesday pointed out that there are two types of rules in Israel-Hamas war: rules of engagement applied in Gaza and Lebanon, and more stable rules applied in the Golan Heights front.

"I salute the innocent martyrs who are dying in Gaza as a result of the barbaric bombing that trampled all laws and norms,” Jreij said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio station.

“The rules of engagement are realistic, whereas the rules applied in times of war are meant to confine military operations and protect civilians. If we consider that Hamas violated the rules of engagement, then Israel violated the rules of international and humanitarian law. The people of Gaza paid a high price in terms of lives and property,” he noted.

He emphasized that the war cannot continue at this pace for a long time, stressing that the presence of warships serves as a pressure to facilitate negotiations.

Regarding whether Lebanon will be dragged into war, Jreij said: "The battle is not Hezbollah's , so it allowed the Qassam Brigades and the Al-Fajr forces to move from the south but under its umbrella within the rules of engagement.”

He noted that expanding the war serves no one's interests, calling for halting the war and not opening new fronts.

He considered that the war in Gaza is no longer between Hamas and Israel but rather between civilians and Israel since civilians are exposed, while the armed are protected.

"I believe the war will not escalate because Israel wants to respond to the source of the operation that targeted it, namely Hamas, and because Iran has achieved its three goals: firstly, through Hamas launching an unprecedented campaign against Israel; secondly, through slowing down the normalization and Arab-Israeli peace process; and thirdly, by establishing itself as a key player and axis in the region,” he affirmed.

Regarding the upcoming Bar Association elections, Jreij pointed out that except for compelling situations, the elections are inevitable and real, not subject to interpretations, whims, or confiscation,  affirming that no one can postpone or extend them.

"Not everything said is true, and not everything said represents the whole truth. We, as Kataeb Party, have a thing called democracy. We have different opinions and opposing positions, which is natural, and this is what the party leader, Deputy Samy Gemayel, follows. Therefore, I think the confusion arose from a misunderstanding of the Kataeb Party's philosophy and decision-making process, regardless of the type of decision,” he indicated.

"Frankly, I opposed the nomination outright, not from a personal perspective, but the nomination was open to two colleagues. After studying the requirements of the battle and considering my experience, I believed that the battle required unavailable elements. I defended my position until the moment the decision was made in the political bureau, then the party decision became binding and effective against everyone,’” he concluded.
