Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority has raised concerns over an upcoming “more sensitive security period” for international flights, signaling potential military escalation in the region. The warning comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with Israel on high alert for possible security threats.
Shmuel Zakai, head of the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority, sent a message on Sunday evening to foreign airlines operating flights to Ben Gurion Airport, advising that the weekend of January 31 and February 1 could mark the beginning of this heightened security period. Zakai stated that in the event of Israeli airspace closure, priority would be given to departing international flights, to facilitate the safe exit of both airlines and passengers.
"While current assessments suggest stability over the next few days, there is always the possibility of escalation," Zakai said, referring to regional tensions and the potential for renewed talks between the United States and Iran. He noted that such negotiations could help ease the rising security risks.
The Civil Aviation Authority’s warning also included a stern message: if it becomes impossible to ensure a reasonable level of security, Israeli airspace will be closed without hesitation, as it was during periods of heightened tensions in June 2025, and in April and October 2024.
Israel’s defense systems remain fully deployed and operational, with all coordination mechanisms between the relevant authorities in place and functioning at full capacity.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization responded to media reports of new restrictions, asserting that no new decisions regarding flight bans or restrictions have been issued. The Iranian agency clarified that the previous NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), issued during the 12-day conflict, remains in effect, suspending all visual flight rules (VFR) flights until April 25, 2026.
