Israel has accused Iran of smuggling cash to Hezbollah through Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport, a claim that has been shared with a U.S.-led committee monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militant group.
According to the Israeli army, the funds are being transferred by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force using civilian flights. The military alleges that the money is helping Hezbollah rebuild its capabilities following recent clashes.
“The Israeli army is closely coordinating with the U.S.-led committee supervising the ceasefire and is providing relevant intelligence to disrupt these transfers,” Arabic-language spokesperson Col. Avichay Adraee wrote in a statement on X on Wednesday.
Despite Israeli efforts, some cash deliveries may have gone through successfully, Adraee added.
“The Israeli army will not allow Hezbollah to strengthen and will use all available means to enforce the ceasefire agreement in order to safeguard Israel’s security.”
The allegations echo a report by The Wall Street Journal last month, which cited a U.S. defense official stating that Israel had complained to the U.S.-led committee about Iran delivering suitcases filled with U.S. dollars to Hezbollah via Beirut’s airport. The report said Israel’s concerns were relayed to the Lebanese government.
Lebanese security officials, however, have denied such smuggling is taking place, insisting that the airport is under strict military oversight. One Lebanese official suggested that while large cash transfers would be difficult to conceal, high-value items such as gemstones or diamonds could pass through undetected.
