Israel’s military announced on Tuesday that it had eliminated Major General Ali Shadmani, describing him as Iran’s most senior military commander and the acting "war chief of staff" overseeing Iranian combat operations.
According to the Israeli army, Shadmani was killed in an airstrike just days after assuming command of the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran’s top wartime command post. He had taken over the role following the death of his predecessor, Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, who was killed in Israeli strikes on Friday that marked the onset of Israel’s military campaign against Iran.
"Following a sudden opportunity during the night, Air Force fighter jets attacked a manned headquarters in the heart of Tehran," the military said.
The statement characterized Shadmani as “the most senior military figure in Iran” following Rashid’s death, and claimed he was the closest remaining military official to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“He commanded both the Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian Armed Forces,” the military said in a statement.
The Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters, which Shadmani briefly led, functions as Iran’s main strategic command during wartime, responsible for managing combat operations and authorizing offensive actions.
“In his various roles, he had a direct influence on Iran’s offensive plans targeting the State of Israel,” the military added.
Prior to his brief tenure as commander, Shadmani served as deputy head of the same headquarters and was chief of operations within Iran’s military structure, according to Israeli intelligence assessments.
