Iran Assembly Reaches Consensus on Khamenei Successor Amid Israeli Warnings

A broad consensus has largely emerged within Iran over who should succeed the country’s slain supreme leader, according to a senior cleric involved in the selection process, even as Israeli military warnings raised tensions around the anticipated appointment.

Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, a member of the Assembly of Experts, said that most members of the body responsible for choosing Iran’s supreme leader have reached agreement on a successor to Ali Khamenei, who was recently killed, the Iranian news agency Mehr News Agency reported.

Mirbaqeri said, however, that “some obstacles” still need to be resolved before the process can be finalized, according to the report. The identity of the potential successor was not disclosed.

Iranian media outlets said the clerical body had experienced a minor procedural disagreement over how the final decision should be formally issued. Some members argued that the appointment must follow an in-person meeting, while others suggested the decision could be announced without adhering strictly to that requirement.

Meanwhile, Israel’s military issued a stark warning that it would continue targeting anyone involved in selecting a new Iranian leader.

In a message posted in Persian on the social media platform X, the Israel Defense Forces said it would pursue not only any successor to Khamenei but also those involved in the process of appointing him.

“After neutralizing the tyrant Khamenei, the terrorist regime of Iran is attempting to rebuild itself and select a new leader,” the Israeli military wrote.

The statement added that the Assembly of Experts — the clerical body tasked with appointing the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader — is expected to convene soon in the Iranian city of Qom.

“We want to tell you that the hand of the State of Israel will continue to pursue every successor and every person who seeks to appoint a successor,” the military said. “We warn all those who intend to participate in the successor selection meeting that we will not hesitate to target you either.”
