Energy drinks might have unintended health risks on the heart and blood pressure, warned a new study published on Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Researchers found that caffeinated energy drinks affect the heart's electrical activity, thus causing "mild" electrical changes.
However, according to study author Sachin Shah, people who take certain medications or suffer from a heart condition can experience increased risk of a fatal arrhythmia, or rough heartbeat.
"Unlike drugs, supplements and consumer products do not necessarily get tested for safety," Shah said.
According to the World Health Organization, these energy drinks "may pose danger to public health."
Children "should not consume" them, cautions the American Academy of Pediatrics.
