A woman underwent an antibiotic implant surgery at Tibnin Public Hospital, in what is considered to be the world's first operation of its kind.
According to The Daily Star newspaper, Najah Wazani fractured her knees in a car accident in Saudi Arabia 13 years ago. Two of her children were killed in the crash.
Two years later, the 65-year-old woman became unable to walk properly due to chronic inflammation in her bones and joints.
Last week, she underwent a surgery during which an 9-centimeter-long implant, with an antibiotic release system, was inserted into her left leg.
The antibiotic substance, aimed at fighting infection and inflammation, will be secreted over a period of nine months, after which the implant should be replaced.
Once she recovers from the first operation, the woman will undergo another one for her right leg.
“It’s the first operation of its kind in the world,” the newspaper quoted Dr. Bilal Obeid, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, as stressing.
