MP Elias Hankach sharply criticized the Environment Ministry on Friday, accusing successive ministers of failing to address the country’s lingering waste management crisis.
Hankach’s comments came in response to remarks by Environment Minister Tamara Zein, in which she said the ministry serves as a mediator between the government, the Council for Development and Reconstruction, and the municipality of Jdeideh regarding waste management issues.
“One minister leaves, another arrives… Environment ministers come and go, passing the blame along; they accuse their predecessors and try to shift it to those who follow! They neither enforce the environmental law nor even read it," Hankach wrote on X.
He added that the ministry is evading responsibility by delegating the waste management file to the Council for Development and Reconstruction and municipalities, while merely acting as an intermediary.
“Waste needs treatment, not dumping on the shores of Metn. Waste requires responsibility and courage,” Hankach stressed.
