MP Elias Hankach blamed Lebanon’s ruling class for obstructing digitalization in public administration, citing corruption, bribery, and a lack of political will as key factors. He argued that Lebanon is being deliberately held back from progress, as if it were incapable of joining the ranks of developed nations.
In an interview on Voice of Lebanon, Hankach said that corruption is deeply entrenched in the public sector at all levels, making reform efforts increasingly difficult. He stressed that artificial intelligence has become a crucial tool across various industries, leaving no valid excuse for Lebanon to lag behind in its adoption.
"We must improve infrastructure, change the prevailing mindset, and take decisive steps that cut off the profits of brokers and corrupt figures—there is no turning back," Hankach asserted.
He also highlighted that Lebanon’s neighboring countries have ministries dedicated to technology and the digital economy, which prompted him and his colleagues to push for the creation of a similar ministry in Lebanon.
"We called on Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to establish a Ministry of Technology, and this was ultimately achieved—offering new hope for progress. The minister appointed to this portfolio is the right person for the job, and as the rapporteur of the Technology Committee, I look forward to collaborating with him. A meeting is scheduled soon to develop a strategy that will benefit future generations and lay the foundation for a better future," Hankach stated.
