Hankach Criticizes Financial Gap Law, Calls It “State Theft”

MP Elias Hankach took to social media to sharply criticize the government’s financial gap draft law, likening the State’s approach to what he called “theft.”

In a post on X, Hankach drew an analogy to illustrate the prolonged delays in returning citizens’ money amid Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis.

“It’s like lending money to a friend, and when it’s time to pay it back, the friend says, ‘Forget it. Maybe I’ll give you a small portion in six years, and as for the rest, God will provide,’” Hankach wrote.

Hankach added that when the lender threatens legal action, the borrower responds: “‘No, no, it’s called a ‘financial gap.’ It is not a big deal. And there’s nothing you can do about it,’" Hankach wrote.

"That’s exactly what the State has done to the people," the lawmaker concluded.
