Hakim Stresses Importance of Electing a President Instead of Normalizing Vacuum

Political Bureau Member Alain Hakim pointed out that the current caretaker government does not represent the orientations of the Lebanese people nor the newly elected parliament, stressing the importance of electing a president instead of normalizing the vacuum.

“The current government cannot be compared with Tamam Salam’s one due to the balance within the government. The balance between opposition and sovereign forces was clear within the previous government. Tamam Salam’s government was fully-fledged and was granted the confidence of the parliament,” Hakim said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon.

“Every time they want to settle scores in the cabinet the headline “Powers of President or Powers of Sects” comes to fore. The Constitution does not normalize the vacuum that must be filled within the institutions. All these headlines and titles are used to cover the sustainable failure,” he noted.

Hakim stressed the importance of electing a president, approving the capital control law and opening discussions between Lebanon’s creditors and Eurobonds holders, affirming that the Kataeb Party is working on submitting a proposal draft law on capital control and it is following what is happening the parliament concerning this law.

When asked about the presidential elections sessions, he said: “Some deputies are carrying out their duties, electing their presidential candidate and showing their willingness to open up to other candidates. This situation cannot persist as we do not have the luxury of time amid all the crises that are hitting the country. The solution lies in the holding of successive parliamentary sessions.”

Hakim stated that the Kataeb Party agreed to the invitation of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri for dialogue and dealt with it positively, provided that it is accompanied by sessions and practical solutions.
