Kataeb Party Vice President, Dr. Bernard Gerbaka, stated that the election of a president and the formation of a government represented a pivotal moment in restoring Lebanon’s institutions and putting the state back on the right track.
“Today, there is widespread recognition of the necessity for an active president, government, and parliament, each fulfilling its responsibilities,” Gerbaka said in an interview on Voice of Lebanon.
He commended the newly elected president, describing him as a leader who had demonstrated his abilities in managing the Lebanese Armed Forces during challenging times.
“President Aoun has proven his competence in leading the military and navigating the risks faced by the Lebanese army. He enjoys broad support from all segments of Lebanese society, as well as from the Arab and international communities,” he remarked. “He has shown himself to be the leader Lebanon needs at this critical moment.”
Gerbaka emphasized that Lebanon now had an opportunity to begin the process of national recovery.
“We must address urgent issues such as people’s bank deposits, the Beirut port explosion investigation, and the inquiries into past assassinations. Studies and statistics show that the majority of the Lebanese population does not want war; they want development and prosperity.”
Turning to security concerns, Gerbaka praised the Lebanese army for its resilience in the face of multiple threats over the years.
“The military has fought on various fronts, from eastern Lebanon to the interior of the country, when confronted with terrorist organizations. Today, in the south, our soldiers continue to make sacrifices and endure injuries, while military outposts are being attacked and destroyed. These sites must be rebuilt, as the army has consistently demonstrated its competence and continues to do so. While diplomatic solutions are pursued, the Lebanese army remains on the front lines, fighting and resisting,” he stated.
Addressing the recent attack on the army near Beirut’s airport road, Gerbaka condemned the assault, emphasizing that “the wounded soldiers are citizens from all across Lebanon, representing every sect and region."
“The army belongs to everyone; it is the institution responsible for maintaining stability and security throughout the country. Every political party has condemned these attacks because they are completely unacceptable,” he said.
“The army is defending all Lebanese citizens. It is essential that we stand by it.”
Gerbaka also highlighted that the Kataeb Party had long advocated for a national reconciliation and truth conference, with party leader MP Samy Gemayel presenting a proposal for such an initiative to the president, who recognized its importance.
With the 50th anniversary of the Lebanese civil war approaching on April 13, Gerbaka called for national reflection and unity.
“As we approach this anniversary, I invite all components of Lebanese society, including those with whom we have disagreed in the past, to engage in a process of truth and reconciliation,” he said.
He stressed the importance of political parties supporting the president’s efforts to convene such a conference.
“Lebanon cannot build a future without this process. Justice for all martyrs must be a fundamental part of our national journey forward.”
