General Security Prepares Mechanism for Syrian Refugee Repatriation

Acting Director General of the General Security, General Elias Baysari, has intensified his consultations in order to develop a mechanism for the repatriation of displaced Syrians.

General Security began facilitating the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to Syria in 2017, and so far, 540,000 refugees have returned.

A security source explained to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the prosecution of Syrians who enter Lebanon illegally is not new. It began in 2017 following a decision taken by the Supreme Defense Council.

It added that the ministerial committee in charge of the refugee file provided political cover for the pursuit of displaced persons who do not have official papers, to repatriate them immediately.
