Gemayel Warns Against Obstructionist Tactics Directed at Opposition, Vows to Counteract

In a statement to "Asharq al-Awsat" newspaper, Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel reiterated that "one should not dwell on formalities regarding consultation as long as we do not violate the constitution."

"We, for example, reject the idea of the parliamentary council conducting consultations that exceed its authority.  However, it is not crucial, for example, whether we convene for consultation in one, two, or three rooms," he noted.

Gemayel warned that "some are attempting, through certain initiatives, to throw the ball of obstruction into the opposition's court; however, we will counter these attempts," adding, "What concerns us is the outcome, not the form. If there are no guarantees regarding three fundamental points, then any consultation would be futile."

The Kataeb Leader stated that "the first point is related to the call for an open session in consecutive sessions, regardless of the outcome of the consultation. The second point is related to ensuring the quorum. As for the third point, it is the readiness to discuss a third candidate who can bring together all Lebanese and put the country on the path to a solution."

Gemayel observed that "it does not seem that Hezbollah is ready, despite all the current active initiatives, to elect a president as long as it is in the midst of a war with Israel; because having a president in Baabda Palace would confuse it, especially since the president would then be responsible for negotiating in a way that preserves Lebanon's interests."

"Today, Hezbollah is engaged in Iran's battle in the south and is preparing to negotiate in a way that serves its interests," he asserted.
