Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel affirmed that the priorities for the upcoming phase include “ensuring compliance with the ceasefire agreement, which stipulates the exclusivity of arms and the sovereignty of the state over the entirety of Lebanese territory. This begins with addressing Palestinian arms outside and within the camps and extends to Hezbollah’s weapons and those of all armed groups.”
He clarified that this is the “first step” in the reform process, emphasizing that “reinforcing state sovereignty and centralizing arms under its authority” is the gateway to all other reforms.
Gemayel stressed that the Kataeb Party rejects settling scores or compromising on the fundamental principles upon which the state is built.
He reiterated openness to all parties and a commitment to collaborative efforts to rebuild the country with a spirit of cooperation and understanding.
He highlighted that restoring balance to political life is a pivotal goal for the next phase, underscoring that “partnership and equality” in state governance are indispensable principles that the Kataeb will not relinquish.
He further remarked, “No one can impose their will on others in all matters at all times.” This approach, he explained, underscores the necessity of “ensuring that all Lebanese are partners in rebuilding the state,” noting that “no single entity can bear the responsibility alone” in this endeavor.
Gemayel’s remarks were delivered during the handover ceremony for the leadership of the Kataeb Students and Youth Department between Elias Semaan and Nadim Karam, attended by several party officials and current and former department members.
In his address, the Kataeb Leader began by commending the work of the Students and Youth Department, emphasizing the importance of this party unit, which has produced members well-versed in leadership and resolute in their positions.
He pointed out that all party leaders have emerged from this department.
Gemayel congratulated the outgoing head of the department, Elias Semaan, who took on his responsibilities during exceptionally challenging times, collaborating with all comrades to navigate a period fraught with difficulties.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of himself and the party for the efforts made during that tenure.
He also wished success to Nadim Karam, who now assumes the role within a venerable party with an 89-year legacy.
Gemayel highlighted that the party has been led by seven successive presidents and continues to thrive thanks to democratic practices, including elections held every four years to select its leadership.
He noted that such a democratic approach is a rarity among other political parties.
The Kataeb leader called on the Students and Youth Department to serve as a driving force in propelling the party toward reinventing itself and enhancing its performance to align with contemporary demands and better serve the country’s interests.
