Gemayel Says Kataeb Party Is in the Service of Lebanon

Newly Kataeb elected lawmaker Samy Gemayel stressed that Hezbollah and its allies have suffered losses in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, saying that it is a great achievement to restore Lebanon’s legitimacy.

“This armed militia has bet on obtaining the parliamentary majority and renewing the legitimacy of arms. Unfortunately, it was a catastrophic failure,” Gemayel said in an interview with LBCI and Al Arabiya.

“I expect the formation of a parliamentary bloc of more than 20 deputies that would be liberated from all the political forces that concluded the 2016 presidential settlement and led the country to this deteriorated situation,” he noted.

“The Kataeb party is in the service of Lebanon, it has won once all the lists across Lebanon have succeeded. Our aim is to unite as many forces as possible so as to confront and to prevent the avoidance of accountability,” he added.

“We won a seat in Keserwan with the success of our candidate, Selim Sayegh, and in Beirut, where Nadim Gemayel won a difficult battle alone. Therefore, we are satisfied with the results and we hope that that the results would be good for the country. For example, the Syrian National Party did not get any seat and this is a positive thing, as there will no longer be parties that do not believe in the Lebanese presence in the Parliament,” he pointed out.

Gemayel stressed the importance of confronting corruption and illegal weapons, calling for the unification of all the Lebanese in a bid to create one opposition front.

“We seek an independent, decentralized and a pluralistic Lebanon. We are ready to combine our efforts with any party that has the same vision as us,” he said.

The newly Kataeb elected lawmaker pointed out that the Lebanese constitution does not prevent the formation a government of specialists.

“We seek competent people so as to get out of this deteriorated situation. Saving the country cannot be achieved through quotas and governments of national unity. We seek an independent government that sets a program to save the country and addresses decentralization in a serious way. We promised the Lebanese that it would be the first issue that we would raise in Parliament, in addition to developing the political system. There are loopholes in the constitution that must be addressed, as well as the electoral law that must be developed,” he concluded.
