Gemayel Rejects Linking the Fate of Lebanese to the Fate of Gaza

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel, commented on the speech of Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, stating that there was nothing new in his speech.

“The entire speech was entirely expected. It is well-known that the decision regarding opening all fronts is not with the axis. For this reason, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General distanced himself from the events of October 7th, openly stating that it had occurred by Hamas and Iran and all its regional proxies hold this card,” Gemayel said in an interview with Al-Arabiya.

"Today, it becomes more evident that the official Lebanon no longer exists, and the will of the Lebanese people is disregarded, as are the opinions of legitimate institutions. The decision is solely in the hands of Nasrallah, who is linked to the axis, and he has clearly declared his affiliation with it, tying the fate of the Lebanese people to Gaza, which we reject,” he indicated.

"As much as we sympathize with the people of Gaza, and as much as we denounce civilian casualties. We are not willing to live through the tragedy that we experienced over 50 years while witnessing our country being destroyed due to the calculations of Hezbollah, dragging Lebanon into this war,” he noted.

Gemayel reiterated his belief that “Hezbollah acts by its own interest and Iran's interest."

“This is not about Hamas but rather about the interests of Hezbollah and Iran. Their interest today is to avoid getting involved in the war, though it may change in the future. This party keeps its options open, and we are detached from our own views and affiliations; our fate is held hostage to their decisions, which infringes upon the right of the Lebanese people to determine their destiny, linking it to what is happening in the region and in Gaza, and this is something we strongly reject,” he explained.

Regarding Netanyahu's response to Nasrallah, Gemayel said, "All possibilities are open, and it is the responsibility of the international community to pressure Israel to stop the massacres and calm the Israeli government, and also to pressure Iran to calm down and stop the kidnappings it conducts against the people of the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, which takes the people hostage."

"Arab and international efforts should be exerted to protect Lebanon and the Palestinians to stop the cycle of destruction and the killing of innocents," he stressed.

The Kataeb Leader emphasized that “it is the right of the Palestinians, after 75 years of oppression, to defend themselves. The situation they are in is unbearable, and no people can endure such imprisonment. However, from our human and ethical convictions, we do not justify in any way the killing of children, women, and innocent people. This is unacceptable from any perspective and on any nation”.

Gemayel reiterated that it is the right of the Palestinians to defend themselves and work towards an independent state, but the solution lies in the two-state solution and returning to the initiative of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which aims to restore peace in the region and move towards a peaceful path.

“The path of bloodshed from the extremist Israeli government, which insists on the annihilation of innocents, will only lead to more extremism, killing, and destruction and will not bring peace and security to the Palestinian people,” he stated.

He also stressed the need to put pressure on Iran to disarm the militias that stir up conflicts at every stage.

Gemayel affirmed that it is time for the peoples of the region to live in peace, to move towards modernity, openness, development and economic prosperity.
