A parliamentary committee in Lebanon last week issued a draft law for restructuring the country’s financial sector. Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced that Beirut would not forcibly disarm the Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah as part of its effort to gain a state monopoly on weapons. Instead, Aoun said Hezbollah would be convinced to give up its arms on its own, through dialogue and negotiations. Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel noted that "the parliament should only convene to elect a president, yet unfortunately, we have been in violation of the constitution for a long time."
"We cannot engage with the people of the South as if we are not concerned with what is happening there; this is a sovereignty issue related to the sovereignty of the state," Gemayel said at the beginning of the parliamentary session devoted to discussing the European Union's donation and the displaced Syrians' file.
Gemayel had previously affirmed via LBCI that "there is no bargaining on the displaced Syrians' file. We will evaluate the government's proposal based on its content."
