Gemayel on Capital Control: How Withdrawal Terms Are Determined Without Losses Distribution?

Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel voiced his refusal over Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh’s failure to attend joint committee session in the Parliament, saying that any Lebanese Official shall appear before the Parliament when he is summoned.

“ The priority is to protect depositors and the Lebanese economy and not allow any clearance to be given to those who seized depositors' money and smuggled money during the past three years,” Gemayel pointed out.

“The goal of Capital Control is to control transfers abroad and set the rules for withdrawals and operations in Lebanon with the aim of restoring balance to the current account and the balance of payments, and protecting the Central Bank’s deposits in foreign and national currency,” he said when asked about Capital Control.

As for the withdrawals, Gemayel asked: "How will the withdrawal take place if we do not know the amount of remaining funds in the Lebanese banks and the Central Bank?”

“How withdrawal terms are determined without distributing losses and restructuring the banks?” He asked.

Gemayel suggested that Capital Control Law be shortened by controlling the process of transferring funds abroad, linking the talk about withdrawals in Lebanon to a comprehensive plan that includes restructuring banks, determining the size of losses and distributing them to build on it, and returning money to the Lebanese people from any financing sources.
