Kataeb Leader Samy Gemayel emphasized that there is no need for initiatives or consultations to reach a solution to the presidential elections if Hezbollah relinquishes its insistence on imposing its candidate and agrees to go to a third name that can be agreed upon.
Regarding the southern issue, Gemayel stressed the necessity of preserving any negotiations on this matter to uphold the sovereignty and self-determination of the Lebanese state and the exclusive possession of weapons by legitimate authorities.
Gemayel's words came after his meeting with the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, followed by a meeting with German Ambassador to Lebanon Kurt Georg Stockl-Stillfried.
The meetings were attended by Kataeb Political Bureau Member Zeina Hobeika as well as Kataeb Foreign Affairs Department Head Marwan Abdallah.
"If the Lebanese state is not responsible for Lebanon's security, this implies that we are heading towards a future where the fate of the Lebanese people is tied to other countries and groups, rather than necessarily being connected to the right of the people to determine their destiny through their legitimate representatives and deputies," he pointed out.
"We have not fully comprehended the initiative proposed by the National Moderation Bloc, neither its specifics nor its mechanisms. We find it perplexing that certain parties have agreed to it, given the lack of clarity on the matter. We hope for elucidation of its content to enable us to formulate a stance towards this initiative," he stated.
"For instance, the initiative suggests that after consultation, there will be open sessions, while Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri asserted the next day that parliamentary boycott of sessions is a constitutional right, and it does not guarantee that deputies will not boycott sessions. He questioned how we can discuss an initiative that emphasizes open sessions while the Speaker confirms the deputies' right to boycott, thus affirming in one way or another that the convening of open sessions is not assured," he explained.
"We do not require initiatives, consultations, nor dialogue tables. It is quite simple: either Hezbollah persists in its policy of imposition to push through its candidate, thus no solution to the presidential elections will be found, or it is willing to consider a third name. At that point, we can reach an agreement on a president within a short period," Gemayel concluded.
