Kataeb Party leader Samy Gemayel on Friday marked the anniversary of a series of historical tragedies affecting Christians in the region, saying such events underscore that regimes built on oppression and violence ultimately collapse.
“On April 24 of every year, we recall the Armenian Genocide, the Sayfo massacres, and the Mount Lebanon famine, along with all the persecution, crimes, and attempts to erase the existence and identity of Christians and our people in this land," Gemayel said in a post on X.
April 24 is widely commemorated as the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed in the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The Sayfo massacres targeted Assyrian Christians in the same period, while the Great Famine of Mount Lebanon (1915–1918) devastated large parts of present-day Lebanon, causing widespread starvation and the deaths of tens of thousands.
Gemayel said these events serve as a reminder of broader patterns of violence and exclusion.
“We remember these events to affirm that history clearly shows that all regimes built on occupation, oppression, mass killings, and the elimination of others ultimately come to an end, no matter how long they last,” he said.
“By contrast, nations founded on recognizing others and respecting their history, identity, and rights endure.”
He added that historical memory remains a powerful force shaping the present.
“This is the course of history: injustice does not last, and memory never fades. Today, amid everything we are living through and witnessing, these truths are more evident than ever,” Gemayel said.
